The Mayoral party arrives in styleMayor tests Sealegs on the sea shore: There was a somewhat dramatic arrival by Mayor Andrew Williams and Mayoress Jane Williams when they opened the new Takapuna Beach Café and Store beside the camping ground last week. The Mayor came ashore in a Sealegs amphibious craft, designed and manufactured on the North Shore and now selling around the world. Welcoming the café and store’s addition to theTakapuna beach front Mr Williams said the occasion celebrated the success of two projects, Sealegs and preservation of the beachfront site as a public amenity. The café and store is on council land and has been designed with the needs of both locals and tourists in mind. The café and store is already proving very popular.

Resignation leads to Community Board election: As the result of the resignation of Mr Peter Burn on 30 April 2008 an extraordinary vacancy exists in the office of an elected member of the Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board. Given this extraordinary vacancy occurred more than 12 months before the next triennial general election (October 2010), the Local Electoral Act 2001 provides Council with no option but to fill the vacancy by conducting an election. Accordingly an election will be held, "polling day" being Wednesday, 16 July 2008. More information

Royal Commission submission: North Shore City has filed the city's submission to the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance. North Shore City waited until the last moment to ensure maximum input from residents including integration of a submission from North Shore Iwi. The city's submission says North Shore City is unique because it is well defined geographically, has clear communities of interest, and is an active and willing regional participant. The City Council has told the Royal Commission that regional governance should be enhanced while at the same time local government needs to be protected. Mayor Andrew Williams says North Shore City’s approach will help lay the groundwork for the city and the region, and ensure that the area maintains its local identity and governance, yet makes a major contribution to ensuring that the region becomes a true Pacific city with world class attractions and infrastructure. Milford Pedestrian Bridge requires more investigation: North Shore City’s Community Services and Parks committee has considered a report on the proposed Milford Pedestrian Bridge and requested more information before making a decision on the project. The bridge would allow pedestrians a quicker route to Milford Reserve via Wairau Creek. The initial proposal is for a “bascule” bridge that would open for certain periods so that boats moving between the adjacent marina and the sea can pass underneath. The City Plan has set aside a budget of $2 million for construction. No decision has yet been made on a final structure for the bridge and a number of issues are yet to be resolved. More Information

The city needs public views on CCTV in public places: North Shore City Council is seeking feedback on its draft CCTV (Closed Circuit Television System) policy from residents, businesses and organisations. The policy applies to CCTV systems or cameras owned or operated by or on behalf of the council, or located on council land or in council facilities. Interested persons or organisations are invited to lodge written comments on the draft plan. The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Friday 23 May 2008. More information

Generous grants for seven arts projects: North Shore City Council’s Grants Assessment Subcommittee has announced grants totalling $400,000 for seven arts projects of regional significance from the city’s share of the Auckland Regional Services Trust Arts (ARST) fund. Of the 20 expressions of interest received from across the region’s arts sector, seven were found to fit the eligibility criteria requiring projects to be of regional significance and/or to contribute to the ongoing development of the region’s arts infrastructure. The seven successful applicants cover a range of different disciplines; including theatre, writing, photography and contemporary dance. The North Shore City Council has only made two ARST allocations previously, the last being in 2001. In the intervening years an interest dividend from the original grant has accrued, making the amount available substantial. More information

Kent Isomura won the top awardYouth talent emerges for new city award: The Grand Final of Shore Got Talent was held at the Bruce Mason Centre recently and attracted an amazing array of local youth performances. In total, twenty-nine performers made up the final 17 items, 5 of them being group performances. There were two dance groups, a string trio, a Rock group and a pair of jugglers. Individual items ranged through piano, dance, song, accordion, magic, acoustic and electric guitar. It was not an enviable task for the judges to decide between such a range of talented entertainers but after due consideration Kent Isomura (pictured) carried away the top $1500 award and Nikohl Katene (Dance) gained the $500 second Award. Underwater harbour link may be 4 tunnels: The latest thinking on another major crossing of the Waitemata Harbour sees the suburban electric rail network and State Highway 1 extending beneath the seabed in tunnels to connect the North Shore with the Auckland CBD and beyond. The recommended option comprises four tunnels – two for trains and two for the motorway - east of Auckland Harbour Bridge. The Central Motorway Junction on the isthmus would link to the Northern Motorway, while the suburban rail network could in future be extended northward from the Auckland central business district to the North Shore. North Shore City last night endorsed the proposal and will be investigating further development of passenger rail services on the North Shore More information

City supports new wharf developments: North Shore City Council has announced its support in principle for a new Bayswater Ferry Terminal proposed by ARTA. A briefing from ARTA to North Shore City’s infrastructure and environment committee on Thursday indicated a new terminal would enable increased peak ferry service frequency up to 15-minute intervals and bring the standard of passenger waiting areas in line with that of the Shore’s new busway stations. Committee chair, Councillor Ken McKay, says the recent granting of a resource consent for the new terminal is another significant step in the ongoing improvement of public transport infrastructure in North Shore City. “The proposed new terminal for Bayswater is a great way for North Shore City and ARTA to build on the public’s enthusiastic response to our new Busway stations.” More information

Onewa upgrade on course for completion: The first stage of the Onewa Road upgrade is almost complete and the widened section of road over Onepoto Creek will be finished in June. It is part one of a two-stage project by North Shore City Council to build a dedicated car pooling/ bus priority lane stretching from Lake Rd to Sylvan Road. Onewa Road is one of the most congested roads in the city but once the upgrade is complete many more people will be able to travel quickly down it during peak hours in the morning and evening. The cost of the upgrade is $2.7 million. More information

Pohutukawa trees are a safety risk: Hinemoa Park users are top of mind in a move by the North Shore City Council to fell twelve of the Birkenhead park’s 61 Pohutukawa trees. The felling will occur on May 13 and 14 and follows a robust consent process. The trees concerned have deteriorated to the point that they are in a structurally poor condition and pose a risk to park users and cars parked in the vicinity. Already several cars have been damaged by falling debris from the trees, including one that was flattened in 2006. More information

Beach Front Lane transformed: The upgrading of Beach Front Lane on the Browns Bay foreshore is virtually complete and there’s now a people-friendly link between the shopping area and the beach. What was formerly an uninviting and shabby parking area has been transformed over the past ten months by North Shore City Council. The shopping area used to turn its back on the beach and it was hard for people on foot to access the waterfront. But now an attractive connection has been created, with a natural flow between the two areas. Finishing touches are being completed and the formal opening will be on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers sought for community planting day: The city is looking for green-fingered volunteers to assist at a community planting day on Sunday May 18 from 12 to noon. It’s a great chance to get in touch with nature, help make our city more green and to meet your neighbours. This planting day is at Unsworth Reserve and will be followed by a complimentary barbeque. Bring the kids, a spade if you have one, and make sure you all wear sturdy footwear. More information
